OUR STORY

How We Got Here

15 years ago, Melanie and Jeff Young felt the needs of the poor and homeless in Birmingham and began reaching out to serve in homeless shelters and halfway houses. We seek to serve the whole person physically (food, clothing, etc.), socially (friendship), mentally (wisdom), and spiritually (connecting with one another and with our Creator in love). Our focus is on the individual person. We seek to bring love and wholeness to people's lives by building personal relationships, teaching, and need assistance.

Seek the Welfare of the City

Jer. 29:7

Shalom For The City is a nonprofit dedicated to treating every person with love, respect, grace, and compassion. We strive to positively impact our community by serving others and making a difference in their lives. Every person deserves to be treated with kindness and dignity, and that's what we seek to provide.

Caring For The Needs Of Others

Serving Meals at Shelters and on the Street

The act of feeding those in need is a gratifying experience for both us and our clients. Our Serving Meals in Shelters and on the Street program allows us to provide hot, hearty meals to those who might otherwise go hungry. We serve meals both in shelters and on the street at various locations throughout the year, usually on a monthly basis. Join us in our mission to make an impactful difference in our community.

Classes

At Shalom For The City, we value love and kindness above all else. Our faith-based classes are designed to foster a sense of belonging and provide encouragement to those who need it most. Read more about our recent projects and discover how you can get involved in our mission.

Other Projects

At Shalom For The City, our main focus is serving those in our community who are in need. We strive to empower the most vulnerable by responding to a wide range of needs, including providing shelter repairs, furniture donations, job application guidance, spiritual counseling, and more. As we list our projects, we hope you'll join us in serving the community.
